POLICING BLACKNESS AND BLACK BODIES: ON BERT WILLIAMS’ A NATURAL BORN GAMBLER

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2022, 3:30 PM (PDT)

Presented by the Department of Film and Media Studies.

Althea Wasow, postdoctoral fellow at UC Santa Cruz, will explore A Natural Born Gambler (1916), a predominantly black-cast silent film featuring Caribbean American star Bert Williams, and how the film interrogates the discursive production of black masculinity, illuminates the limits of black performativity, and contributes to abolitionist imaginary.

This event will take place in 2135 SSMS on the UCSB campus.
