On June 5th from 3:30-5 p.m. in Music room 1145, UCLA anthropology professor Alexandra Lippman will discuss the politics of criminalization and culturalization around Brazil’s local popular music, funk carioca. Lippman argues that funk carioca’s criminalization in lower and middle class areas and culturalization in the wealthier parts of Rio de Janeiro reveals how different parts of the city are regulated by the government. The event will be followed by a reception and a live DJ set.
